The story of Villa Kakoliri
This garden, shaded by its old pomegranate tree, was once at the heart of Giorgos's grandmother's home. She was known throughout the village for always helping others and for keeping her door open to everyone.
Having lived in Athens for many years, she helped people from Taxiarches settle into life in the city when they moved there, and supported her friends and family in their everyday lives. Today, Giorgos opens the doors of her home to his guests, continuing his grandmother's tradition of generosity and welcome.

Explore Manikia ProjectA place of memory
The beauty and hospitality of Taxiarches coexist with a painful history that the village continues to honour.
On 24 May 1944, during the German occupation of Greece, German SS troops, accompanied by Greek Security Battalions, entered Kakolyri in retaliation for the death of a German soldier during a Resistance attempt to sabotage the Skoteini Bridge.
Men and boys—some only fourteen years old—were arrested as homes were looted and set on fire. Later that day, 30 civilians were executed, including six people from nearby villages. Fifty-six houses, more than half of the village, were destroyed.
A memorial mound and the Church of Hosios Symeon now stand at the place of execution. Every year on 24 May, the community commemorates the victims. In 2025, Taxiarches–Kakolyri was officially recognised as a Martyr Village, the first in Evia.
